LEGISLATIVE DAY COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!!

Dear Members of ADAC:

The Alabama Disabilities Action Coalition is currently seeking active and committed volunteers to be a part of the ADAC Legislative Day Committee. We need people to assist with logistics and marketing the program. This committee will be the cornerstone to an effective Legislative Day in Montgomery. We want to expand on the first Legislative Day event and make this a yearly event for members of ADAC. Please contact Shannon Weston at Shannon.weston@alc.nmss.org if you are interested in serving on this committee.

Over one hundred and fifty advocates with disabilities met with their legislative delegations in Montgomery on March 13, 2003. The group assembled at the RSA Union Building and were joined in open session by Senator Rodger Smitherman and Senator Wendell Mitchell. Both men expressed their willingness to work with ADAC on legislation to benefit Alabamians with disabilities. The timing of ADAC's visit coincided with debate on legislation to increase voting accessibility.

Following the general session, ADAC members moved over to the State House and paid their individual representatives a visit to discuss ADAC's position on access, employment, transportation, community-based care and the need for an Alabamians with Disabilities bill. ADAC members came to Montgomery from Huntsville, Mobile, Talledaga, Tuscaloosa, Monroeville, Winfield, Jasper and Birmingham to attend Legislative Awareness Day.

The delegates representing Alabama's 945,000 disabled citizens included members of People First, The ARC of Alabama, the MS Society, the National Federation for the Blind, Lakeshore Foundation, Alabama Respite Resource Network, ADRS, and the Mobile and Birmingham Independent Living Centers.
